We had to write a blog post for getting into a media career of out choice for uni...

Introduction

Just like getting into any other profession, getting into screenwriting will require some sort of strategy. And as you might expect, there are many strategies one can use to achieve that position. Here, I've constructed a pretty basic, yet effective strategy that can be used to help reach your goal to becoming a screenwriter.

Know The Job Description

The first task that I believe you should first clear off to becoming a screenwriter is knowing the job description. This can help give you an insight on what the profession is all about and prepare you for the sorts of things you will undertake at work.

At its simplest, as a screenwriter, your job is to write the dialogue, characters, and storyline for a screenplay. The scripts that you'll write can be either adaptions of existing stories or of wholly original works, and they describe in detail the action and dialogue that gets shown on screen.

You will also have to work very closely with your directors and producers, and their ideas, and need to be flexible with the information that you're given.

There also isn't any formal training that is absolutely necessary for you to complete to work as a screenwriter, and all you will need is just some beforehand experience. However, it would be helpful to showcase your experience as a writer through a portfolio, or even evidence that you've participated in a bachelor's degree or certificate in programs related to screenwriting and/or film.

Familiarise With The Skills/Capabilities

You will want to also familiarise with the skills and capabilities so you can prepare them for when you get into the industry.

Writing: To be a screenwriter, the most essential skill you should have is writing. (It's in the name!) You will need to have the ability and knowledge to construct coherent sentences and storylines, create in-depth characters, and fluid dialogue.

Creativity: The next important skill needed for screenwriting is to be able to write engaging stories, characters, and dialogue that feel like they've had a lot of thought and heart put into them. You don't necessarily have to bring something wholly new to the table every time, but it is good if whatever you write is identifiable as your own.

Observation: Often, a lot of writers' ideas come from real life events that they find themselves in or witnessing, and other pieces of media. As a writer, you'll want to be able to observe what's going on around you so you can apply the information you come across to your own writing.

Interpersonality: Working as a screenwriter means working with a team, typically with a director and a producer. You will want to be able to communicate and maintain a good relationship with your team as much as you can.

Handling Criticism/Rejection: When you provide your work to the people you're working with, it is important to be open to criticism and the possibility of rejection. It's a scary thought when starting off, but the fear should wear away with more exposure.

Apply Those Skills/Capabilities To Yourself

Once you've gotten a glimpse of the required skills and capabilities for screenwriting, a great thing to do is to apply those skills to yourself and develop them as best you can.

Understand The Industry

If you want to get into any profession, it is also necessary that you familiarise with the industry that it's part of. And if you want to become a screenwriter, you'll want to look into the entertainment industry, particularly in film.

By looking into the film industry, you'll learn to understand its general nature so that you can prepare yourself for the kinds of experiences that you will have and the nature of the industry.

The entertainment industry is said to be quite competitive, and this is an undoubtedly intimidating pointer. But this shouldn't be something to stress so much about. A good strategy to strengthening your presence is to always start off small, and one of the ways screenwriters start off in the industry is by doing freelance writing or editing jobs.

Conclusion

So, that's it for what I've got on becoming a screenwriter! I hope this information is beneficial to you and that it comes to good use.

However, I also want to get out that almost none of the what I've said are straight facts; they're only words of advice that are based from my knowledge and research. There is no one way that you can successfully get into a profession, and you can take in whatever information that you find useful and leave out what you don't.

If there is anything else that I haven't mentioned, feel free to share some of your advice, too.

But nonetheless, I'll wish you luck on your path to becoming a screenwriter!
